Hey all,
new to the forum and to the world of Mopar in general. Still a Chevy guy at heart, but loathe as I am to admit it, Ma Mopar is the only one of the big three that's serious about performance nowadays. Not that I'm getting rid of my trusty rusty 87 caprice rat rod anytime soon, but the wife refuses to get in the thing, and she's DEFINATELY not letting me take the kid anywhere in it. Fortunately, she recently was driving a Charger that she got as a loaner, and fell in love with it, so I managed to convince her that a Magnum would be the perfect family vehicle. Now I'm looking at two possible candidates and I need y'all's expertise to figure out which one I should get. One is a 2005 rt RWD with 75k on the clock. Owner is a mopar enthusiast and clearly mechanically inclined judging by his menagerie of backyard projects, despite this the oil level was a bit low and the car has apparently been off the road for 8 months though it has been "driven around the yard". In any case it started ran and drove well when I tested it.
The second is a 2006 rt AWD with close to 90k, haven't been to see it yet but the owner seems like not a car guy per se but a very anally responsible owner who has kept all service records from which I can see that a lot of potential problems have been dealt with, including the infamous pink shifter thing. I know that the coil packs were improved for 2006, but that seems like it would be easy enough to retrofit myself, are there any other significant improvements made for 2006 MY? Anything significant enough to outweigh the disadvantages (if any) of the AWD? Bottom line, if I want a reliable family hauler that I can also do a bit of wrenching on to improve it's sporting capacities, which one should I go for? (Prices are roughly comparable).
