What is this? What does it do? And can I remove it?

I recently replaced the pink thing under the shifter and found this :











I initially thought it tied into the radio but the wires aren't connect to any harness going to the radio. I want to remove it but I also don't want it to be one of those things that screws the car up either.

I also apologize for the poor quality pics (still kicking an Iphone 4) There is also something in the spare tire well that may be associated with this. Ill get pics later.
